The Progressive Education Institute is embedded in the urban campus of Harlem Village Academies, a network of five public charter schools based in Harlem, NYC. Perhaps the most well-known urban community in the world, Harlem is the historical epicenter of the American civil rights movement where legendary activists, intellectuals, artists, and community leaders struggled for social justice.

One place for work and study. Like medical students in a teaching hospital, PEI grad students learn through immersion in progressive K-12 classrooms right on campus, as well as through interacting with our vibrant learning community of graduate students, new teachers, experienced master teachers, graduate school faculty, and K-12 students.

A glorious renovation.  The Goldman-Sonnenfeldt Building, a beautiful brownstone gut-renovated in Fall 2017, features a student center, classrooms, study carrels, seminar spaces, faculty offices, an education library, and a backyard for outdoor events.

An ideal location.  Located on 124th Street in the heart of Harlem, PEI is adjacent to several HVA schools, down the street from Marcus Garvey Park and the Harlem Public Library, and a few blocks from the Apollo Theater.  With the 2/3 train around the corner and the 6 train and Metro-North a short walk away, the whole city and its environs are right there for you to explore with your colleagues and students.
